Doctrine of “Noscitur a Sociis”

Doctrine of “Noscitur a Sociis”

The doctrine of “Noscitur a Sociis” is a rule of construction. It is one of the rules of language used by courts to interpret legislation.

Noscitur a Sociis means that ‘the meaning of an unclear word or phrase should be determined by the words immediately surrounding it.

In other words, the meaning of a word is to be judged by the accompanying words.

The translation of Noscitur a Sociis is - where two or more words are associated together, they should take their meaning from one another.

In other words, it can be said that the meaning of an unclear word or phrase must be determined by the words that surround it.

Therefore this rule or doctrine is more colloquially known as “birds of a feather flock together”.
