Saint Arunagirinathar (அருணகிரிநாதர்)

குறியைக் குறியாது குறித்தறியும்

நெறியைத் தனிவேலை நிகழ்த்திடலும்

செறிவற்று உலகோடு உரை சிந்தையும் அற்று

அறிவற்ற அறியாமையும் அற்றதுவே. (கந்தரனுபூதி பாடல்-42)

“I shall first take up St. Arunagirinathar of the 16^th century. He was born and bred at Tiruvannamalai, known in Sanskrit as Arunachala. It is a sacred hill, in the caves of which Yogis, Siddhas and Gnanis had done tapas from time immemorial to the present.

As a young man, Araunagiri led an immoral life, and later through the guidance and blessing of his own sister, he became an ardent devotee of Lord Skanda, and through His grace, a brilliant mystical poet. He composed thousands of Thiurppuhal in praise of Skanda in His various Shrines of South India. He went on pilgrimage to all of them for the dedication of his poems. His other important works are Kanthar Alangaram and Kanthar Anubhuti. The latter is a work dealing with God experience. Lord Skanda’s two consorts, Theivanai and Valliammai, represent Will and Energy (Ichcha and Kriya) and His Lance (வேல்) stands for Gnanam or Wisdom.

In the 42^nd verse of Kanthar Anubhuti, Arunagirinather gives a beautiful exposition of the incomparable Vel (Lance) as the Self, experienced in Super consciousness or Samadhi state. I first learned about ‘meditation without the mediator’ from the sacred lips of Ramana of Arunachala fame. Later I discovered that the same teaching was expressed in different words by Arunagirinather about 400 years earlier. The gist of the poem referred to above is that the Supreme Goal of life is attained when the Lord, out of His grace chooses to bless us and reveals himself as the incomparable Vel.

We must study this 42^nd verse after meditating on the 40^th one."

கந்தரனுபூதி பாடல்-42

குறியைக் குறியாது குறித்தறியும்

நெறியைத் தனிவேலை நிகழ்த்திடலும்

செறிவற்று உலகோடு உரை சிந்தையும் அற்று

அறிவற்ற அறியாமையும் அற்றதுவே.

(குறிக்கோளைக் குறிவைக்காமல், முக்தியைக் குறித்து அறிந்து கொள்ளும் நெறியை, தனிவேலை உடையவன் எனக்கு நிகழ்த்தி உள்ளான்; அதனால் நான் செறிவு பெற்று, இந்த உலகத்துடன் உரையும் சிந்தையும் அற்று, எனது அறியாமையும் நீங்கி விட்டதே!)

கந்தரனுபூதி பாடல்-40

வினை ஓட விடும் கதிர்வேல் மறவேன்

மனையோடு தியங்கி மயங்கிடவோ

சுனையோடு அருவித் துறையோடு பசுந்

தினையோடு இதனோடு திரிந்தவனே.

(வினையை ஓடும்படி விரட்டிவிடும் கதிர்வேலை மறக்க மாட்டேன்; நான், மனை எனும் இந்த இல்வாழ்வில் மாட்டிக் கொண்டு, கலங்கி, மயங்கித் திரிய, நீ, என்னை விடலாமா! சுனையோடும், அருவிகளோடும், அருவித் துறைகளோடும், பசும் கதிர்களோடும் இவற்றோடு திரியும் வள்ளியுடன் காட்டில் திரிபவனே!)
