"Aditya Hridaya"

Rama himself at the time of combat with Ravana recited twice the Hymn known as Aditya-Hiridaya, meaning 'The heart of the Sun".

This was a hymn imparted to him by sage Agastya, and it is meant to be recited every day by people for success in life and for the removal of obstacles or enemies, who impede one's progress, both material and spiritual.

The following is the English rendering of the hymn:

"Master of the stars, planets and constellations, O, Sun, you are guardian of the world; you are giver of light to all luminaries; obeisance to you who appear in twelve forms."

In this hymn, Sun is praised as Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, Skanda and all other gods. The twelve forms mentioned refer to Sun presiding over the twelve signs of the Zodiac, during the twelve months of year.

ஆதித்ய ஹ்ருதயம்:

நம: பூர்வாய கிரயே பஸ்சிமாயாத்ரயே நம:

ஜ்யோதிர் கணனாம் பதயே தினாதி பதயே நம:

ஜயாய ஜயபத்ராய ஹர்யச்வாய நமோ நம:

நமோ நம: ஸஹஸ்ராம்ஸோ ஆதித்யாய நமோ நம:

(கிழக்கில் பர்வதத்தில் இருப்பவரே நமஸ்காரம்; மேற்கில் மலையில் இருப்பவரே நமஸ்காரம்; நட்சத்திரங்களுக்கும், கிரகங்களுக்கும் அதிபதியே நமஸ்காரம்; ஜெபிப்பவருக்கு ஜெயத்தையும் மங்களத்தையும் கொடுக்கும், பச்சை குதிரை வாகனத்தையும் ஆயிரம் கிரணங்களுடன் கூடிய சூரிய பகவானே நமஸ்காரம்;)
