“விவாகத்தின் பின்னர், குடும்பத்தோடு அமெரிக்காவில் குடியேறி வாழ்ந்து வந்த எனது நண்பரொருவர் பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்னர், தாயகத்திற்கு திரும்பினார்; அப்போது எனது வீட்டிற்கு அவரின் 10 வயது மகனுடனும், 8 வயது மகளுடனும், தமிழ்ப் பண்பாடு மாறாத அவரின் மனைவியுடனும் வந்திருந்தார்;

எனது பிள்ளைகள் அவர்களுடன் கூடி விளையாடினர்; அதன்பின், என் பிள்ளைகள் என்னிடம் வந்து, “அப்பா! இவர்களுக்கு ஒரு தமிழ்ச் சொல்கூட தெரியவில்லை; அப்பா அம்மா என்பதைக் கூட டடா, மமி என்றுதான் சொல்கிறார்கள்” என்று கூறினர்;

தமிழ்ப் பெற்றோருக்குப் பிறந்த இந்தப் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு அதுவும் தமிழாசியர் குடும்பங்களில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த பெற்றோர்களின் பிள்ளைகளுக்குப் பிறந்த பிள்ளைகள் தமிழ் தெரியாமல் இருப்பது என்பதை என்னால் நம்பவே முடியவில்லை;

சற்று நேரத்தின் பின்பு அவர்களுடன் உரையாடிய பின்னர், எனது சந்தேகம் தெளிந்தது; தமிழ்ப் பெற்றோருக்குப் பிறந்த பிள்ளைகளுக்கு தமிழ் தெரியாத நிலை என்பது எனக்கு அதிர்ச்சியை ஊட்டியது; என் மனதில் ஏற்பட்ட ஆத்திரத்தில், “என்ன நண்பரே! இவ்வளவு அழகான குழந்தைகளைப் பெற்று இருக்கிறீர்கள்; ஆனாலும் அவர்கள் “ஊமையாக” இருப்பதைக் கண்டு மனம் வருந்துகின்றேன்” என்று சொன்னேன்;

நண்பர் சற்று அசந்து போனார்; பின்பு, ஆத்திரத்துடன் என்னிடம், “என் பிள்ளைகள் பேசுவது உமக்கு கேட்கவில்லையா? உமது காது செவிடாகி விட்டதா? அதுவும் பெற்றோராகிய எங்களிடமே எங்களின் பிள்ளைகள் ஊமை என்று சொல்லிகிறீர்களே?” என்று ஆத்திரமாகக் கேட்டார்;

“நீ சொல்வது சரிதான்! ஆனால், உன் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு தமிழ் பேசவே தெரியவில்லையே! அப்படியென்றால், அவர்கள் தமிழில் ஊமைகள்தானே!” என்று கேட்டேன்;

இப்படி நான் பேசியதால், என் நண்பருடனான உறவு முறிந்து விட்டது; நாங்களும் நட்பில் ஊமைகள் ஆகிவிட்டோம்;

“1961ம் ஆண்டு யாழ்பாணச் சத்தியாக்கிரகத்தை அடுத்து இராணுவத்தினர் குவிக்கப்பட்ட நேரத்தில், ஒரு விருந்துக்காக இரண்டாயிரம் உளுந்து வடைகள் தயாரிக்கும் பொறுப்பு தந்தையாரிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டது; கூடவே ஒரு நிபந்தனையும் விதிக்கப்பட்டது;

சாதாரண கடையில், ‘மிளகாய்த் துண்டுகள் எண்ணி வடையில் வைத்துச் சுடுவதும், இராணுவத்தினர் தொடர்பும் பிரச்சனை என்பதால்’, இந்த ஓடரை எடுத்துக் கொள்ள முதலாளி விரும்பவில்லை; ஆனால் தந்தையார் துணிந்து விட்டார்;

இரண்டாயிரம் வடையையும் வாங்கிச் செல்ல வந்த இராணுவ அதிகாரி, “ஒவ்வொரு வடையிலும் சரியாக ஐந்து மிளகாய்த் துண்டுகள் இருக்குமா?” எனக் கேட்டார்;

“ஓ! .. அதெல்ல்லாம் சரியாக இருக்கும்” என்று தந்தையார் பதிலளித்ததுதான் தாமதம் – இராணுவ அதிகாரி ஒரு வடையை மெதுவாகக் கிள்ளி, அதிலுள்ள மிளகாய்த் துண்டுகளை எண்ணிப் பார்த்துவிட்டு, கோபமாக, “என்ன, நாலு துண்டுகள்தான் இருக்கு?” என்றார்;

தந்தையார் சிறிதும் பதற்றப்படாமல், “இரண்டொரு வடையில் நாலு துண்டுகள் வைத்ததாக நினைவு; மற்றதெல்லாத்துக்கும் சரியாக ஐந்து துண்டு மிளகாய் வைத்திருக்கிறேன்” என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டே ஒரு வடையை எடுத்து, மெதுவாக நுள்ளி மூன்று மிளகாய்த் துண்டுகளை அதிகாரியின் கையில் கொடுத்து, மிகுதி வடையைத் தமது வாயில் போட்டு, “அம்மா! உறைக்குமே! நாலு ஆ... ஐந்து... ஸ்...” என்று கணக்குக் காட்டினார்;
பணம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது, தன் முதலாளியின் வயிற்றில் பால் வார்த்தார்;

“தொழிலைச் சரியாகச் செய்கிறோம் என்றால், ஆர்மிக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, யாருக்குமே பயப்பட வேண்டாம்.”

அருணகிரிநாதர்

Saint Arunagirinathar (அருணகிரிநாதர்)

“I shall first take up St. Arunagirinathar of the 16th century. He was born and bred at Tiruvannamalai, known in Sanskrit as Arunachala. It is a sacred hill, in the caves of which Yogis, Siddhas and Gnanis had done tapas from time immemorial to the present.
As a young man, Araunagiri led an immoral life, and later through the guidance and blessing of his own sister, he became an ardent devotee of Lord Skanda, and through His grace, a brilliant mystical poet. He composed thousands of Thiurppuhal in praise of Skanda in His various Shrines of South India. He went on pilgrimage to all of them for the dedication of his poems. His other important works are Kanthar Alangaram and Kanthar Anubhuti. The latter is a work dealing with God experience. Lord Skanda’s two consorts, Theivanai and Valliammai, represent Will and Energy (Ichcha and Kriya) and His Lance (வேல்) stands for Gnanam or Wisdom.
In the 42nd verse of Kanthar Anubhuti, Arunagirinather gives a beautiful exposition of the incomparable Vel (Lance) as the Self, experienced in Super consciousness or Samadhi state. I first learned about ‘meditation without the mediator’ from the sacred lips of Ramana of Arunachala fame. Later I discovered that the same teaching was expressed in different words by Arunagirinather about 400 years earlier. The gist of the poem referred to above is that the Supreme Goal of life is attained when the Lord, out of His grace chooses to bless us and reveals himself as the incomparable Vel.
We must study this 42nd verse after meditating on the 40th one."

Rama worshipped Shiva at Munneswaram, before his battle with Ravana. Rama himself at the time of combat with Ravana recited twice the Hymn known as ‘Aditya-Hridaya’, meaning ‘The heart of the Sun’. This was a hymn imparted to him by sage Agastya, and it is meant to be recited every day by people for success in life and for the removal of obstacles or enemies, who impede one’s progress, both material and spiritual. The following is the English rendering of the hymn:
“Master of the stars, planets and constellations, O, Sun, you are guardian of the world; you are giver of light to all luminaires; obeisance to you who appear in twelve forms.”

In this hymn, Sun is praised as Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, Skanda and all other gods. The twelve forms mentioned refer to Sun presiding over the twelve signs of Zodiac, during the twelve months of year.

Allowance for corruption

Make due allowance for the corrupting influence of power
Rama was returning to Ayodhya with Sita, Lakshmana, Vibhishana, Hanuman and others. Their plane, known then as Pushpaka, reached Allahabad, and broke journey on Rama’s orders.
He called Hanuman and addressed him as follows:
“You are a Yogi, who can read the face of a person and see through his eyes his innermost thoughts and divine his plans. Now I want you to fly to Ayodhya, meet Bharata and announce our arrival at Ayodhya this evening for my coronation tomorrow. Please see his reactions from his face and read his thoughts and come back soon.” You can tell him that ‘myself and my party have already arrived at Allahabad, and only a flight of 45 minutes remains.”
Hanuman was surprised that Rama should suspect the motive of his beloved and devout brother, Bharata. Hanuman replied: “Lord, why do you doubt the sincerity of Bharata? You know he has been ruling the country with your sandals placed on the throne with reverence and devotion. He is anxiously waiting for the moment your holy feet would touch the soil of Ayodhya so that he may shift the burden off his shoulders.”
Rama told Hanuman that he knew Bharata’s devotion, but he must make due allowance for the corrupting influence of power. He said “Bharata had enjoyed this power for 14 years. He may feel unhappy to be deprived of it. I do not wish to be the instrument to cause him that unhappiness. We are used to the forest life, and can easily return to it.”
On hearing this Hanuman flew to Ayodhya, met Bharata and conveyed the message. Bharata was full of joy and started dancing in glee. Hanuman returned to Rama and reported the matter accordingly. The party arrived at Ayodhya, and the coronation took place as originally planned by Destiny.

Siva religion flourished in ancient Lanka

 Siva religion flourished in ancient Lanka
Ravana, Mandodari and their parents were all devotees of Lord Shiva. Tradition says that they had worshipped at the three important shrines of Ketheeswaram (near Mannar), Koneshwaram (near Trincomalee) and Munneswaram (near Chilaw).
It is said that Mandodari’s father built the temple at Ketheeswaram, and Ravana’s mother aided the construction of Koneswaram. Rama is also reported to have worshipped at Munneswaram, and on his return to India, after crowning Vibhishna, Ravana’s brother, as King of Lanka, to have built the now famous Sivan temple at Rameswaram.
 (This is a part of the excerpts of the speech of Mr. Ramachandra, the highly esteemed Editor of the internationally famous ‘Religious Digest’, who delivered this speech to sixty four Roman Catholic Nuns, belonging to different Orders, at the Aquinas University College, Colombo in 1971.)

Sita is not the only virtuous woman!

 Sita is not the only virtuous woman!
Rama was a person who took the Eka-pathini-virata, vow of marrying only one wife. On the contrary, his enemy Ravana was a sensuous Rakshasa who ran a harem of thousand women. To be virtuous and faithful to a husband who is equally virtuous and faithful to the wife may be normal and easy of practice, but to be devoted, obedient and faithful to a husband who was fond of many women, and was running after other men’s wives, needed patience, forbearance and virtue of a higher order. These things, Ravana’s wife, Mandodari, possessed in abundance, and her memory is still kept alive in the Hindu classics.
In her purity of heart, Mandodari saw that Rama was no mere man. After Ravana was killed in battle, she hurried to the spot where his body lay, and lamented as follows:
“Alas! You who had vanquished the gods have met with death by human hands. But I do not believe Rama to be a mere man. It is clear that the Supreme Being, greater than the great, invincible Vishnu of true valour, has taken human form for the goods of the world. I implored you to make peace with Peace. You never listened and you have now reaped that fruit of your actions. Death comes to everyone in some form and to you it came in that of Sita. The curses of the virtuous wives whom you have violated have come true; truly it is said that the tears of a chaste woman do not fall in vain.”
After lamenting thus, the spirit of Mandodari left her body as if on its ways to the heavens in search of the spirit of her husband which was already separated from its body by Rama’s deadly missile, the Brahmastra.

பொறுமைக்கு இலக்கணமாக சீதையை குறிப்பிடுவர்; அவள் கற்பிலும், பொறுமையிலும், துன்பத்தை சகித்துக் கொள்வதிலும், வாழ்க்கையை அர்பணித்து வாழ்வதிலும் மிகச் சிறந்த பெண்மணி; ஒரு இந்து பெண்மணி, திருமணத்துக்குப்பின் எப்படி பொறுமையுடன் வாழவேண்டும் என்பதை இவரது வாழ்க்கை ஒரு படிப்பினையாக சொல்லும்;
ராமன் ஏக-பத்தினி விரதன்; அவன் வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரே மனைவியை மட்டுமே திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ளும் கொள்கை உடையவன்; அப்படியே நேர் எதிரானவன் இராமனின் எதிரியான இராவணன்; இராவணன் இராட்சசன்; எனவே அவன் இயல்புக்கு ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் மனைவிகள்;
மண்டோதரி கற்பில் சிறந்தவள்; இராவணனுடன் போர் புரியும் இராமன் சாதாரண மனிதன் இல்லை என்றும் அவர் கடவுளின் அவதாரம் என்றும் தன் ஞான அறிவால் கண்டுகொள்கிறாள்; மண்டோதரி கற்பு அப்படிப்பட்டதாம்;
இராவணன் போரில் இறக்கிறான்; இராமன் அவனைக் கொன்று விட்டார்; இது தெரிந்த, இராவணன் மனைவி மண்டோதரி கதறிக் கொண்டு, அவள் கணவன் இறந்து கிடக்கும் இடத்துக்கு வருகிறாள்; அங்கு இப்படிப் புலம்புகிறாள்;
இவ்வாறு இறந்த கணவனின் உடலைப் பார்த்து கதறி அழுத மண்டோதரியின் ஆன்மா அவள் உடலை விட்டு அப்போதே பிரிந்து மேலுலகு சென்றது; இராமனின் பிரம்மாஸ்திரத்தால் தாக்குண்டு இறந்த தன் கணவன் இராவணனின் ஆன்மாவை தேடிச் சென்றதாம்;

Zemmzem spring (மெக்காவின் ஜம்ஜம் ஊற்று)

 Zemmzem spring
“Discussing the treachery of step mothers, you might recall The Arabian story of Abraham and his two queens, who had a son each. Sarah, the favourite queen, the mother of Isaac was jealous of Hagar, the second queen who had a son by the name Ishmael.
One day, Sarah complained to her husband that Hagar was always despising her and frightening her that when Ishmael grew up he would be the heir to the throne. She wanted the King to promise that her son Isaac would be his successor and demanded that Hagar and Ishmael should be sent into the desert.
The King did as the first and favourite queen dictated. Carrying the small boy on her shoulders, Hagar reached the Red sea, where tired and very thirsty, she seated herself on a rock and wept in fear lest her son and she should die in the desert of thirst.
The boy kicked the sand below his feet, and a spring of fresh water gushed out of the sand. This spring is now known as Zemmzem. Abraham heard of the miracle and rushed to the spot and built a temple.
The descendants of Ishmael built the sacred city Mecca around the temple.
The children of Isaac multiplied in the course of years and came to be known as Jews.
In the same way, the children of Ishmael multiplied into a big race known as Arabs.
The old jealousy and rivalry seem to thrive still in spite of thousands of years.

Life After Death (மரணத்துக்குப் பின்)

Life After Death (மரணத்துக்குப் பின்)
Katha Upanishad:
"I shall take the Katha Upanishad in story form so that you may listen to it with interest and keenness. Here we find a contrast in the study of worship of God by people of different temperaments for different purposes.
Story:
 Elderly father Rishi Vajasravas devoted to the lower sacrificial path of action (Karma) performed the Visvajit sacrifice, with the object of gaining power over the whole universe, while his young and only son, Nachiketas was inquisitive of the higher path of knowledge of Self, and the secret of what happened after death.
After watching his father giving away gifts of good, cows and all other belongings, the impatient boy asked his father twice: “To whom will you give me?” The father answered not, but the boy persisted a third time. The old man lost his patience and burst out in a temper: “To Death I will give you.”
True to the word of the father, the son proceeded to the abode of the Lord of Death, whom the Hindus call as Dharama Raja, which means the representative of Almighty God meeting out justice to all souls. The Lord was not at home, and the boy waited at his door without food for three days.
On returning home, Yama, (God of Death) expressed regret and offered three boons as recompense. As the first boon, Nachiketas asked for his father not to be angry with him, and to receive him back with joy and understanding when he returned home. It was readily granted.
As the second boon, he asked for the secret of the immortality which is attained in heaven by those worshippers who performed the Fire-Sacrifice to be imparted to him. This too was readily granted.
Thereupon, Nachiketas addressed Yama thus: “After a man is dead, there is this doubt: some say he is; some that he is not. I should like to hear the actual truth from you. This is the third boon I seek.”
The Lord of Death was taken aback and said: “On this question, the very Gods have their doubts. It cannot be solved easily. So subtle is the truth. Do please ask for another boon, say sons and grandsons, kingdom, gold, elephants, horses etc., and long life to live, with every material prosperity. Do not persist in questioning about life after death.”
Nachiketas replied: “Of a single day’s duration is the joy derived from the possession of the kingdom, gold and other goods mentioned by you. Man can never be satisfied with them for all time. They merely dissipate the energy of the senses. I do not want them. Please grant me the boon I beg for. You yourself say that even the Gods have not got it after becoming Devas. I do not think I can find another teacher like you to let me know this secret.”
Satisfied with the equipment of the young man, and convinced of the seriousness and sincerity of his aspiration, the Lord of Death taught him that secret knowledge. He said that the imperishable Self is not to be won by teaching, intellect or much learning. It is to be won only by him, who seek Self; the him this Self reveals it nature.
Lord Krishna expounds elaborately in Bhaghwad Gita the teachings embodied in this Upanishad. One of such passage runs:
“whatever moving there is in the world, all that is embraced by the Lord; enjoy by renouncing it (the world); covet not anybody’s wealth.”

வஜாசிரவஜர் என்னும் வேதியர், யாகம் செய்து முடித்தவுடன், தன்னிடமுள்ள பொருள்களை எல்லாம் தானம் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்; அவருக்கு ஒரே ஒரு மகன்; அவன் பெயர் நசிகேதன்;
அந்த நசிகேதன் தன் தந்தையைப் பார்த்து, “தந்தையே! உங்களிடம் இருப்பதை எல்லாம் தானமாகக் கொடுக்கிறீர்களே! என்னையும் யாருக்காவது தானம் கொடுப்பீர்களா? என்று கேட்கிறான்; இரண்டு முறை கேட்டும், அவன் தந்தை பதில் சொல்லவில்லை; இவன் விடாமல் மூன்றாம் முறை கேட்கும்போது, தந்தை கோபமாக, “உன்னை எமனுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறேன்” என்று கூறிவிட்டார்;
மகன் அதை அப்படியே ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு, எமன் இருக்கும் இடமான எமலோகத்துக்கே வந்து விட்டான்; இவன் வந்தபோது, எமன், அவர் வீட்டில் இல்லை; எங்கோ வேலையாக வெளியில் போயிருக்கிறார்; மூன்று நாட்கள் ஆகிவிட்டது அவர் வருவதற்கு; அதுவரை, உணவு, உறக்கம் இல்லாமல், எமன் வீட்டு வாசலிலேயே காத்திருக்கிறான் அந்தச் சிறுவன் நசிகேசன்;
எமன், வீட்டுக்கு திரும்பி வந்து பார்க்கிறார்; இவன் இப்படி பிடிவாதமாக காத்திருப்பதாகச் சொன்னார்கள்; அவன் மேல் இரக்கம் கொண்டு, “உனக்கு தேவைப்படும் மூன்று வரங்களைக் கேள் தருகிறேன்” என்று கூறுகிறார்;
முதல் வரம்: “நான் என் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிச் செல்லும்போது, என் தந்தை என்னை திட்டாமல், ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்று கேட்கிறான்; எமனும், “சரி, தந்துவிட்டேன்” என்கிறார்;
இரண்டாவது வரம்: “பூமியில் இறந்தவர்கள், எமனுலகு செல்லும் வழியில் இருட்டில் தடுமாறித் திரிகிறார்கள்; இங்கு இறந்தவர்களுக்கு யாகம் செய்தால், அவர்களை மோட்சத்துக்கு அனுப்பிவிட வேண்டும்” என்று கேட்கிறான்; அதுவும் தந்துவிட்டேன் என்கிறார் எமன்; அதன்படி மோட்சத்துக்கு செல்ல செய்யப்படும் யாகங்களை சொல்லித் தருகிறார்;
மூன்றாவது வரம்: “மனிதனின் மரணத்துக்குப்பின், அவன் வாழ்கிறான் என்று சிலர் சொல்கிறார்கள்; அப்படி வாழமுடியாது என்றும் சிலர் சொல்கிறார்கள்; உண்மையில் மரணத்துக்குப் பின் நடப்பது என்ன? எனக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்று கேட்கிறான்;
எமனுக்கு தர்ம சங்கடமாகி விட்டது; “நசிகேதா! இந்த விஷயத்தில், தேவர்களுக்குக்கூட சந்தேகம் உள்ளது; இது இன்றுவரை தீர்ந்தபாடில்லை; எனவே உனக்கு என்னென்ன பொருள்கள் வேண்டும் கேள், நீண்ட ஆயுளைக் கேள்! தருகிறேன்” என்று ஆசை வார்த்தை சொல்லி அவனை திசை திருப்பப் பார்க்கிறான்;
நசிகேதன் மசியவில்லை; “தேவர்களுக்கே இதில் சந்தேகம் உள்ளது என்றால், என் கேள்விக்கு பதிலை, உன்னைத் தவிர வேறு யாரும் சொல்ல மாட்டார்கள்; எனவே நீயே எனக்கு தெளிவாக்கிவிடு” என்று கேட்கிறான்; இந்த உலகில் எது ரகசியமாக வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதோ அதைத் தெளிவு படுத்து!” என்று கேட்கிறான்;
எமன், “இந்த உலகில், மேலானது என்றும் சுகம் தருவது என்றும் இரண்டு உண்டு; மேலானதை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டால் நன்மை கிடைக்கும்; சுகமானதை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டால் வீழ்ச்சிதான் கிடைக்கும்” என்றும் “அறிய வேண்டிய ரகசியம் ஆன்மா பற்றியது; ஆன்மாவை அறிந்தவனுக்கு குழப்பமே இல்லை” என்று கூறுகிறான்;

Vedanta and Siddhanta (வேதாந்தம், சித்தாந்தம்)

Vedanta and Siddhanta
“I concluded my last discourse with the statement that there are two important schools in Hinduism, namely Vedanta and Siddhanta.  Today we are concerned only with the former. There is a mistaken idea that by Vedanta philosophy is meant a philosophy confined exclusively to the Vedas or India’s sacred scriptures. The term at present does not refer to a book but to ‘wisdom’. The word ‘anta’ means literally the ‘end’. So, the term Vedanta implies literally ‘end of wisdom’. It explains what end is, and how to attain it.
Upanishads, Gita and Brahma Sutras are considered as Prasthana Traya – the three most important books on Vedanta. Upanishads form the crest-jewels of Vedas and the quintessence of the Upanishads is found in Bhagawad Gita. The Quest of the Reality is really the main theme of the Upanishads.
The concept of God, mystery of the soul, etc, are discussed under this theme, I must also here mention another ancient scripture which is claimed to be earliest work in Sanskrit of the highest order on Vedanta. It is known as Yogavasishta Maha Ramayana, containing the principles of Vedanta as taught by Vasishta Muni to his royal pupil Rama.
The non-dual nature of Brahman, the non-existence of the world in the three periods of time, and that the knowledge of Self alone can free from one from the round of births and deaths, form the three fundamental truths of this scripture.

Satchidananda: (Sat-Chit-Ananda)
“Now I must say a few more words about the blissful state of ‘Satchidananda’. Every intelligent human being has three ultimate aims in life:
1)    To have eternal life. All efforts to delay or avoid death is due to this desire.
2)    To have knowledge of everything in the world, that is, to have unlimited knowledge of things.
3)    To have unending and non-changing happiness.
These three can be achieved only by those who can establish union with the Real Sources. That source is Sat-Chit-Ananda. Sat representing eternal life, Chit standing for full wisdom and Ananda for bliss.
Because our soul has all these potentialities, it aspires to experience and express them in human life. The wisdom of the Rishis who coined this beautiful term is unique indeed! You do not come across such a thought in the scripture of any other religion.

AUM: ஓம்

AUM: ஓம்
 Aum is the most powerful Mantra. You can repeat it in seven symphonies – seven mounting and seven descending – AUM, AUM, AUM, AUM, AUM, AUM, AUM……. aum, aum, aum, aum, aum, aum, aum; AUM is Brahman; it is the primordial sound principle the Word of God. It contains three fundamental sounds – A, U, M.  A is the Pure Almighty Grace, U is the universe of beings pervaded by the Grace and M is man, the individual in whom It is the Soul. The Individual, Universal and the Transcendent souls are pervaded by the unique one who is all, and All-in-all. Let us meditate upon That. That is the meaning of the Mantra of one sound, AUM.”

Gayatri Mantra

Gayatri Mantra
“Let me start today’s discourse with the ‘Gayatri Mantra’ from the first Veda (Rig) which is still recited daily by millions of Hindus.

“Aum Bhur Bhuvah Svah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya dhimahi
Dhiyao yo nah prachodayat”

This is a Mantra invoking Surya-Savitri for the illumination of the intellect. It literally means: “Let us meditate on that adorable splendour of Savitur; may he enlighten our minds.”
God is AUM. He is the supreme. Surya-Savitri, the Lord of supramental illumination. When we Hindus worship Sun in the morning, I mean the Surya-Namaskara, we worship him as the visible representative of the Supreme God. None can deny that the visible sun is the give of life and light. The Hindus maintained clear eye-sight till very late in life through the practice of Surya-Namaskara. I stand before you as one to demonstrate the truth. I did not go for reading-glasses till my 63rd year. That too only after a slight accident to my right eye. I practice the Surya-Namaskara even today.
Speaking about this Gayatri Mantra, I must mention to you an important fact. This Mantra or any other sacred syllable should not be picked up from books or journals and recited. If you are to derive real benefits, you must first be competent and then initiated by a Master. There is an interesting story to illustrate its significance. ‘A king visited his minister at the latter’s residence to discuss an urgent matter of State. He was told by a servant that the minister was in his Shrine room doing Japa, i.e. recitation of some Mantras. When the minister came out and received the king the latter enquired as to what Japa he had been doing. On being told that it was Gayatri Mantra, the king desired to be initiated. The minister was wise and humble to reply that he was unable to do so. Sometime later, the king learned it from someone else, and on meeting the minister, he repeated the Mantra and enquired whether it was right. The minister replied that it was correct, but then it was not proper for him to say it. The king got displeased and demanded an explanation. The minister ordered the palace peon who was standing by to get hold of the king. The order was not obeyed. The king flew into a rage and ordered the same peon to hold the minister, and it was immediately done. The minister had a hearty laugh and told the king that the incident was the explanation required by the king. ‘How’ asked the king. The minister quietly replied: ‘The order was the same, and the executor was also the same, but the authority was different. When I ordered, the effect was nil, whereas when you ordered there was immediate effect. Similarly with these Mantras.

Manu says: “The single syllable AUM is the Supreme Brahman; control of breaths is the supreme penance. Nothing is higher than Gayatri…. The Seers (Rishis) attained their long life, intellect and spiritual lustre by the length of their Sandhya-worship.” (Morning, noon and evening worship).

ஸவிதுர் = இந்த உலகை உருவாக்கிய;
வரேண்யம் = மிக உயர்ந்த நிலையான;
பர்கோ = சக்தியான;
தேவஸ்ய = ஒளியுடன் கூடிய;
தீமஹி = தியானித்து;
தியோ = புத்தியான;
யோ ந = என்னுடைய;
ப்ரசோதயாத் = தூண்டிவிடுபவர்;

Idol-worshippers

Idol-worshippers
There has been a mistaken idea, and fortunately it is dying out, that Hindus are idol-worshippers, and that they are worshippers of many Gods. They are ideal worshippers and not idol-worshippers. Their symbols are not idols. Their Ultimate God or Reality is called ‘Brahman’, and it becomes ‘Atman’ when individualized.
During the Vedic period, forces of nature were addressed as minor gods and goddesses. The Gods of the sub-division in Hinduism, such as ‘Skanda’ and ‘Ganesha’ are personifications of the Divine Attributes of the ‘Para Brahman’ or ‘Parama Sivam’. They are not different from the ‘Absolute Reality’. In the Vaishnava cult, Rama, Krishna, and others are worshipped as ‘Avatars of Maha-Vishnu.’

Hinduism

Hinduism
"Hinduism was not founded by any particular prophet, as in the case of all other world religions. It contains the accumulated wisdom collected from the spiritual experiences of many Rishis, Sages and Saints of India. We call it a revealed religion for the simple reason that it contains the priceless truths discovered by self-realized men and women. It does not claim any monopoly of truth nor does it dogmatically assert that man can achieve final emancipation only through a particular path described by it. It makes due allowance for the different temperaments of human beings and for the varying stages of evolution in which they are. In this way, it proves scientific as well. The very first scripture, Rig Veda, makes the declaration: “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahutha Vadanthi”… “That which exists is one, men call it by various names”.
